Monticello

Indiana's Twin Lakes town — Lake Shafer, Lake Freeman, Indiana Beach since 1926, and the Madam Carroll on the Tippecanoe.

A Field Guide

What Monticello actually feels like.

A north-central Indiana lakes town in White County — built around two reservoirs (Lake Shafer to the north, Lake Freeman to the south) created in the 1920s when Northern Indiana Public Service Company dammed the Tippecanoe River. Indiana Beach Amusement Park has run on the Lake Shafer shore since 1926 — seven roller coasters anchored by the Hoosier Hurricane and Cornball Express, the Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain, and Steel Hawg's beyond-vertical drop. The 135-foot Madam Carroll — Indiana's largest registered boat — runs dinner cruises out of Lake Freeman from May through November.

Indiana Beach Amusement Park
01

Indiana Beach Amusement Park

An open-air amusement park on Lake Shafer's south shore running since 1926 — over 45 rides anchored by the wooden Hoosier Hurricane (1994) and the Cornball Express (2001) sharing the same support structure, the Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain (an elevator-lift wooden coaster), Steel Hawg (an El Loco with a beyond-vertical drop), the Tig'rr Coaster (Schwarzkopf Jet Star, the park's oldest), and the All American Triple Loop (returned 2024). Plus the Sandy Beach swimming area, the Big Flush water coaster, the Action River lazy river, the Skycoaster, and the lakeside boardwalk that the Spackman family laid out a century ago. Open May through October.

The Madam Carroll Paddlewheeler
02

The Madam Carroll Paddlewheeler

Indiana's largest registered boat — 135 feet long, 300 tons, and a 500-passenger operational capacity — running dinner cruises, live-music cruises, and family afternoon cruises out of Lake Freeman from May through November. Launched in 1976 by Bill Luse Sr. The Luse Lounge dockside bar (named for the family) operates Wednesday–Friday with live music every Friday — Bruce Barker's piano sets and the Blue Sky Band's classic-rock nights are crowd favorites.

03

Lake Shafer Pontoon & Ski-Boat Boating

Lake Shafer (the northern of the Twin Lakes) is the family-and-watersports lake — pontoon, deck-boat, and ski-boat rentals out of Indiana Beach Marina, Shafer Marina, and Sportsman's Marine on the lake's north shore. Average summer water temperature hits 78°F by early July; the Indiana Beach water-ski show launches off the south-shore pier on summer afternoons.

04

Lake Freeman Bass & Crappie Fishing

Lake Freeman (the southern Twin Lake, below the Oakdale Dam) is the quieter, fishing-focused water — known statewide for largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish. The morning bite hits hard around the Tippecanoe River inlet on the lake's south end and around the standing timber off the Norway-side coves. Indiana fishing license required; bait and tackle at the Lake Freeman Marina.

05

Tippecanoe River Float Trips

The Tippecanoe River runs north-south through White County, feeding both Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman — the Norway-area put-ins offer easy half-day floats with smallmouth-bass fishing, sandbar lunch stops, and a slow-current paddle that is family-friendly down to ages eight and up. Outfitter rentals out of Tippecanoe River Outfitters on County Road 925.

06

Indiana Beach Water Ski Show

A free water-ski show operating off the Indiana Beach lakefront pier on summer afternoons — pyramid jumps, slalom runs, and trick-skiing routines by the resident Indiana Beach Ski Team. The classic Lake Shafer mid-afternoon entertainment for renters and day-pass-holders alike.

Monticello is the only town in the Hoosier state where you can ride a 1994 wooden roller coaster at noon, watch the ski-show jump off the Indiana Beach pier at three, fish a five-pound largemouth bass out of Lake Freeman by five, and dance dockside at the Luse Lounge to a crowd-favorite Bruce Barker piano set by nine — all without leaving a five-mile lake circle.

Before you book

Trip Planning, Answered

Best season (May–October), the Indianapolis-Lafayette-Chicago airport triangle, neighborhoods (Indiana Beach side vs Lake Freeman side), pets, and what a Monticello vacation rental actually costs.

When is the best time to visit Monticello?
Mid-May through mid-October is the main season — Indiana Beach is open, the Madam Carroll runs cruises, the Twin Lakes hit swimming temperature (78°F by early July), and the Norway-side Tippecanoe River floats are fishable. Locals favor early June (water warm but pre-school-out crowds light) and Labor Day weekend (Indiana Beach's last big weekend, weather still warm, fall fishing peaking on Lake Freeman). The park closes in late October; November through April is the soft season — most lake-rental properties drop to 2-night minimums and 30–40% rate discounts.
What's the closest airport to Monticello?
Lafayette's Purdue University Airport (LAF) is closest at 30 miles south — but limited service, primarily Allegiant seasonal flights to Florida and Las Vegas. Indianapolis (IND) is 80 miles south at about a 90-minute drive — the practical mainline option with full nonstop coverage. Chicago Midway (MDW) is 110 miles north and Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is 130 miles northwest — the Chicago options often have cheaper fares for renters coming from the East Coast or Texas.
How long should I stay in Monticello?
A 3-night Friday-to-Monday stay is the most common Twin Lakes pattern — enough time for a full Indiana Beach day, a Madam Carroll dinner cruise, a Lake Freeman fishing morning, and a Tippecanoe River float afternoon. Five nights is the multi-family Hoosier-summer-tradition stay. Most lake-rental properties have 2-night minimums in shoulder season; 3-night minimums are common in July and August.
Do I need a car in Monticello?
Yes — Monticello stretches across about 6 miles between Indiana Beach (Lake Shafer south shore) and the Madam Carroll dock (Lake Freeman). Indiana Beach has a parking lot and shuttle but the Twin Lakes corridors (Norway-side Lake Freeman, Oakdale Dam, Tippecanoe River put-ins) all require driving. Rideshare in White County is unreliable; plan to drive.
What's the weather like?
Northern Indiana humid continental — summer (June–August) is warm at 80–88°F days and 60–68°F nights with afternoon thunderstorms. Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) average 60–75°F days. Winter is cold (highs 25–40°F) and Indiana Beach is closed. The water-temperature window (above 70°F) runs roughly mid-June through mid-September — the bookable peak.
Is Monticello good for families?
Yes — Monticello is built around family vacations. Indiana Beach's Sandy Beach swimming, the Big Flush water coaster, the Skycoaster, the Spackman Express miniature train, and the lakeside boardwalk are all sized for kids 4–14. The Madam Carroll's Family Cruise schedule (Mother's Day, Father's Day, summer family afternoons) and the lakefront-cabin pool-and-dock setup at Dave's Last Resort and similar communities round out a multi-generational week. Most Monticello rentals include lakefront dock or community pool access.
Where should I stay in Monticello?
Lake Shafer (north of the canal) is the closer-to-Indiana-Beach pick — best for theme-park-week stays, Sandy Beach swimming, and the boardwalk. Lake Freeman (south of Oakdale Dam) is the quieter side — Madam Carroll proximity, Lake Freeman bass fishing, and the Norway-side Tippecanoe River corridor. Dave's Last Resort on the Lake Freeman shore covers most of RedAwning's Monticello inventory; Indiana Beach also operates its own Beach Club, Lakeside Cottage, and Hoosier Pointe units inside the park grounds.
How much does a Monticello vacation rental cost?
Off-season (November–April), 1- and 2-bedroom lake cabins run $90–$150 a night with 2-night minimums. Shoulder season (May, September, October) the same units run $130–$200. Peak summer (June 15–August 15), 2-bedroom Lake Shafer or Lake Freeman cabins run $180–$285 a night and 3-bedroom lakefront homes run $300–$450. Indiana Beach's own Beach Club Cottages run premium pricing ($250–$400) for the in-park-grounds convenience. Book by April for July; six weeks out is enough for a non-peak weekend.
Are pets allowed in Monticello vacation rentals?
A meaningful share of Monticello rentals are pet-friendly — including most of Dave's Last Resort's lakefront cabins. Pet fees typically run $75–$125 per stay. Indiana Beach itself does not allow pets, but the Lake Shafer public beach, the Tippecanoe River canoe corridors, and the downtown Monticello sidewalks are all leashed-dog-friendly. Always check property-specific rules before booking.
Can I drive my own boat to Lake Shafer or Lake Freeman?
Yes — both lakes have public boat ramps. Lake Shafer ramps include the Indiana Beach Marina ramp and the Twin Lakes Beach ramp; Lake Freeman ramps include the Oakdale Dam ramp and the Norway Marina ramp. White County requires a $25/season visitor boat sticker (available at any of the marinas). The Norway-side Tippecanoe River put-ins above Lake Shafer are kayak-and-canoe-only.
