A Field Guide

What Midway actually feels like.

Midway is the Heber Valley's Swiss-Alpine village — founded 1859 by Swiss converts who saw the wide green valley between the Wasatch and Wasatch Back ranges and named the streets for villages back home (Berne, Basel, Lucerne). The town's center of gravity is the Zermatt Resort & Spa, a multi-acre Swiss-themed village with onion-dome chalets, on-site restaurants, and the country's largest collection of European-style architecture outside actual Europe. Just south of town, the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center hosted the 2002 Olympic cross-country and biathlon events; it now runs 19 miles of groomed Nordic trails year-round and a popular winter tubing hill. The most-photographed Midway feature is the Homestead Resort's 65-foot Crater — a limestone dome filled with 96°F geothermal mineral water, open year-round for soaking, scuba diving, and paddleboarding inside the dome.

Olympic Nordic, the Crater, and the Park City crossover

Activities in Midway

Soldier Hollow's Olympic Nordic trails, the Homestead Crater geothermal soak, the Wasatch Mountain State Park golf, and Park City's two big-mountain ski resorts 25 minutes northwest.

01

Soldier Hollow Nordic Center

The 2002 Olympic Nordic and biathlon venue at the south end of Midway — 19 miles of groomed cross-country trails (classic and skate), a public biathlon range, and a popular family tubing hill in winter. The other place in the country where you can ski the actual Olympic course.

02

Homestead Crater

A 65-foot-deep limestone dome filled with 96°F mineral water at the Homestead Resort — soak, scuba-dive, or paddleboard inside the dome year-round. Reservation required; the most-recommended Heber Valley afternoon.

03

Park City Mountain & Deer Valley (25 min)

The two Park City resorts — 9,300 acres combined, Park City Mountain on the Epic Pass and Deer Valley on Ikon. Midway is the most-recommended Park City lodging crossover for Wasatch ski trips. Free city buses connect every Park City base; lift tickets and rentals book separately.

04

Wasatch Mountain State Park Golf

22,000 acres of alpine state park immediately west of Midway — two championship golf courses (Lake and Mountain), Pine Creek campground, and Cascade Springs hike. Greens fees $40–$80; consistently rated among the best Utah municipal courses.

05

Heber Valley Railroad

A heritage steam-and-diesel railroad running from Heber City through the Provo Canyon — narrated tours, a Polar Express in December, and a Wild West train robbery for the kids in summer. Midway's most-recommended kid-day plan.

06

Deer Creek Reservoir

A 3,300-acre reservoir on the Provo River 5 miles west of Midway — boating, paddleboard rentals, fishing, and the Provo River fly-fishing access at the Inlet. The locals' summer-Saturday alternative to Park City.

07

Provo Canyon Scenic Drive & Bridal Veil Falls

US-189 from Heber down through the Provo Canyon — Bridal Veil Falls (a 600-foot two-tiered waterfall right off the road), the Provo Canyon Trail bike path, and one of the most-photographed scenic-drive stretches in Utah.

Midway is the Park City crossover that locals tell you about when you ask where they go on a powder day off — same Wasatch snow, half the price, and a Swiss-village dinner reservation that makes the whole trip feel like a different country.

Trip Planning, Answered

Best season, the SLC airport question, the Park City crossover logistics, where to stay (Zermatt, Homestead, downtown), and what a Midway week actually costs.

When is the best time to visit Midway?
Midway is genuinely four-season. Winter (December–March) brings reliable Wasatch snow — Soldier Hollow's Nordic and tubing hill, Park City's two big resorts 25 minutes northwest. Spring (April–May) is the secret value window with bluebird days and rates 40% off ski season. Summer (June–August) opens golf at Wasatch Mountain State Park, Deer Creek paddleboarding, and the Heber Valley Railroad's full schedule. Fall (September–October) brings golden aspen and the lowest rates of the year. Sundance Festival (late January) inflates Park City prices but Midway often has availability.
What's the closest airport to Midway?
Salt Lake City International (SLC) is 47 miles west — a 60-minute drive via I-80, US-189, and Provo Canyon. Express vans (Canyon Transportation, All Resort Express) run shared service for $50–90. Most rental companies maintain on-airport offices with snow tires automatically included November through April under Utah's Traction Law.
Should I stay in Midway or Park City?
Midway is the cheaper, quieter Wasatch crossover — Park City's two ski resorts are 25 minutes northwest, the Heber Valley dining is its own scene, and rates run 30–40% below Park City peak. Park City puts you walkable to the Town Lift gondola and Main Street. The two work together: book Midway, cross over for Park City's main events. Sundance Festival weeks are the exception — Park City's January-week premium is significant, and Midway's value gap widens.
Where should I stay in Midway?
Zermatt Resort & Village is the Swiss-themed central hub — 1- to 4-bedroom condo units, on-site dining, indoor pool, and the spa. Homestead Resort sits on 200 acres at the north end of town with the Crater on-site, condo and villa rentals, and a golf course. Standalone homes are scattered through the historic downtown and Wasatch Mountain Estates on the west edge.
Do I need a car in Midway?
Yes — Midway is car-dependent and the Park City crossover requires it. Inside Midway, the Zermatt and Homestead complexes are walkable to many in-village amenities. Park City's free city buses connect Park City Mountain, Canyons Village, and Deer Valley once you drive the 13 miles over from Midway. Snow tires or AWD required November–April under Utah's Traction Law.
How much does a Midway vacation rental cost?
Nightly rates run $250–$450 for 1- and 2-bedroom Zermatt condos, $400–$800 for 3-bedroom layouts, and $500–$1,400 for the Homestead villas and Wasatch Mountain Estates homes. Holiday weeks (Christmas, MLK, President's) command 30–40% premiums; Sundance Festival weeks typically don't (Midway absorbs Park City overflow at standard rates). Summer rates drop 30–40% versus ski season.
Are pets allowed in Midway vacation rentals?
Many Midway rentals are pet-friendly — filter for "Pets OK" on RedAwning when browsing. Pet fees typically run $100–$200 per stay. Soldier Hollow's Nordic system has dog-allowed sections; Wasatch Mountain State Park has dog-friendly trails year-round. Always check resort and HOA rules at the property level before traveling.
