Atlantic Beach sits at the eastern tip of the 21-mile Bogue Banks barrier island in Carteret County, North Carolina — "the Pearl of the Crystal Coast," with Fort Macon State Park's 1834 brick pentagonal fort at the eastern end (Union forces captured it from the Confederacy in 1862 in a 30-minute artillery duel; today the fort's casemates are open daily as a National Historic Landmark). The Atlantic Beach Causeway across Bogue Sound is the single bridge connecting Bogue Banks to Morehead City and historic 1709 Beaufort, North Carolina (the third-oldest town in North Carolina, where Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge was found in 1996 in 25 feet of water at Beaufort Inlet). The Sportsman's Pier and Triple S Marina anchor the village strand.
