About the resort

Welcome to Breckenridgethe highest chairlift in North America since 1961.

Breckenridge opened on December 16, 1961 — the same year the town of Breckenridge celebrated its hundredth birthday as an 1859 gold-rush settlement on the Blue River. Sixty-five years later it's a 2,908-acre, five-peak resort spread across Peaks 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of the Tenmile Range, all served by 35 lifts on a single Epic Pass.

Peak 8 is the historic core (the original chairlift went up here in '61) and home to the Imperial Express SuperChair — at 12,998 feet, the highest chairlift in North America, opening up Imperial Bowl, Whale's Tail, Lake Chutes, and the bootpack to the 13,000-foot crest. Peak 9 is the family side, with one of the deepest beginner zones in Colorado. Peak 10 is the locals' steeps. Peak 6 added 543 acres of intermediate-to-advanced bowl skiing in 2013, and Peak 7 fills the bowls between 6 and 8 with high-alpine cruisers.

The Breck Connect gondola — free, eight-passenger, dog-friendly — runs from a parking structure at the edge of town directly to the bases of Peak 7 and Peak 8 in twelve minutes. The 4 O'Clock Run drops 3.5 miles from Peak 8 all the way to Main Street. Below the slopes, a twenty-two-block Victorian downtown anchors the experience: 200+ restaurants and bars, the Country Boy gold mine ten minutes away, and one of Colorado's longest ski seasons running into May most years.

What to see

A short loop through the exhibits, encounters, and shows that make this stop worth a half-day on its own.

  • Imperial Express SuperChair — 12,998 ft

The highest operating chairlift in North America, opened in 2005 on Peak 8. Lift-served access to Imperial Bowl, Whale's Tail, and the Snow White hike-to terrain — and the bootpack from the top reaches the 13,000-foot Peak 8 summit ridge.

  • BreckConnect Gondola

Free for all riders (skiers, sightseers, dogs), the eight-passenger BreckConnect runs from the edge of historic downtown directly to the Peak 7 and Peak 8 base areas in about twelve minutes — eliminating the need for a car most ski days.

  • Five Peaks Connected by Lifts

Peaks 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of the Tenmile Range are all linked at the top by traverse trails and lifts, so you can ski every peak in a day. Peak 6 (intermediate bowls), Peak 7 (cruisers), Peak 8 (Imperial + Horseshoe + Lake Chutes), Peak 9 (beginners), Peak 10 (locals' steeps and The Burn glades).

  • 4 O'Clock Run — 3.5 Miles to Main Street

Breckenridge's signature top-to-bottom run drops 3.5 miles from Peak 8 to a discreet ski-out behind the historic core of downtown. The longest trail at the resort, named for the unofficial après-ski hour it tends to deliver you into.

  • Freeway Terrain Park

Burton's first U.S. signature park, opened in 1990 — five terrain parks total across Peak 8, including the 22-foot superpipe, the Trygve's beginner park, and the iconic Freeway lineup of jumps and rails. Annual host of the Dew Tour.

  • Lake Chutes & Snow White

The expert-only hike-to terrain off the top of Peak 8 — Lake Chutes' 55-degree pitches, between 10 and 80 feet of cornice depending on the season, with the Snow White zone adding hike-only steeps just to the south. Bring a beacon-shovel-probe and a clue.

  • Snowboarding Pedigree

Breckenridge sold the first snowboard lift ticket in Colorado in 1984, four years before Vail allowed boards on the lifts. The mountain has hosted World Cup snowboarding, the Dew Tour, and X Games qualifiers, and the snowboarding identity still drives the park culture today.

  • 1859 Victorian Downtown

Twenty-two blocks of historic Main Street directly below the slopes — a National Historic District of restored gold-rush-era buildings now housing 200+ restaurants, bars, and shops. The Country Boy Mine on French Gulch Road still runs underground tours of an 1887 working mine ten minutes from the lifts.
